Just a short sail from the Old Town lies Lokrum, an uninhabited island rich in natural beauty, legends, and serenity. It’s a protected nature reserve and a true escape from the bustle of the city.
Lokrum’s recorded history dates back to the 11th century, when Benedictine monks built a monastery on the island. According to legend, when they were forced to leave the island in 1798, the monks performed a curse ritual by walking around the island with candles upside-down, chanting.
Today, Lokrum is a botanical paradise. You'll find eucalyptus, cypress, pine trees, and exotic plants from around the world. The 19th-century botanical garden features rare tropical and subtropical species, and the island is also home to peacocks and rabbits that roam freely.
A highlight for many is the Dead Sea, a small saltwater lake ideal for swimming. The island is car-free, peaceful, and open only for day trips – no overnight stays are allowed, preserving its untouched beauty.
While our tours don’t dock on Lokrum, we often cruise alongside its dramatic cliffs, giving you views of the Benedictine ruins, forested slopes, and hidden coves. From the boat, Lokrum feels like a mystical green fortress – a reminder of nature's quiet strength and ancient secrets.
